[in]formalStudio (IS) is a collective established in Johannesburg in 2012 by Thorsten Deckler, Anne Graupner (26'10 south Architects), Claudia Morgado, and Eric Wright (Boom Architects). Their main activities center around engaging multiple stakeholders in participatory planning, facilitated by the group's expertise in architecture and urban design.
Statement:
Marlboro South was a former apartheid buffer, which had been transformed into a mixed-use residential complex by citizens occupying abandoned warehouses, factories, and land. When residents were forcefully evicted from their homes without warning, the community fought back, demanding that the city of Johannesburg provide them with new housing. Their pleas were successful. Residents and private and public stakeholders engaged with one another to define the future of the area. IS documented part of this process, illustrating a new model for civic engagement in which communities mobilize collectively to improve their own environments.
