Join me on a peaceful walk around Millwall Inner Dock in the Isle of Dogs, London.

The Isle of Dogs, shaped like a large 'U' bend in the River Thames, has a long history connected to the shipping and shipbuilding industry, which was pivotal to London's development as a global trade hub.

The area now known as the Isle of Dogs was originally marshland but transformed dramatically during the 19th century when the West India Docks opened in 1802. The docks were constructed to provide safe and thief-proof berths for ships, which spurred rapid industrial growth. Millwall, part of the Isle of Dogs, became a center for shipbuilding.

Millwall Inner Dock, also historically known as Millwall Dock, was opened in 1868 to further support the thriving shipbuilding and repair industry. The docks specialized in handling grain, timber, and various goods from across the world, contributing significantly to London's economy.

Like much of London’s docklands, Millwall suffered extensive damage during World War II. The bombing caused significant destruction to the infrastructure, leading to a gradual decline in dock activities in the post-war years.

Today, Millwall Inner Dock and the surrounding Isle of Dogs are vastly different from their industrial roots. The dock itself has been integrated into the modern urban landscape, surrounded by residential developments, office buildings, and recreational spaces. It serves both as a historical reminder and a leisure space for new generations.
