Today I want to tell you how I got a $10,000 brand deal here on Youtube when I still had under 100,000 subscribers. I should also take a minute and explain exactly how brand deals work. Typically, with traditional forms of advertising, companies will run ads and commercials to promote their products. Even before Youtube or the internet, companies discovered the power of having a celebrity endorse their products.

When companies caught onto the fact that social media influencers and Youtubers were the new wave of celebrities, they realized that they would need to capture the audiences of these influencers if they wanted to stay relevant and keep selling stuff, to put it in very simple terms. So, just as they had done for many years with athletes and celebrities, companies started offering money to influencers to endorse their product.

It USED to actually be an easy, cut-and-dry transaction. Companies would just ask a Youtuber to talk about a product, cut them a check, and audiences would call the Youtuber a sellout and smash the dislike button, instead of the like button which I hope you’ve already smashed.

Things have completely changed though! I think companies realized they were overspending on some of the Youtubers they worked with, and most brand deals you’ll see now are based on more of a discount code system, where a channel will tell you to go sign up for a service or purchase something with their discount code or affiliate link, and of course the influencer is paid based on the amount of people who use that code or link. Also, brand deals are now seen as a form of clout that a channel has “made it”; rather than being frowned upon as they once were back around the 2014 era.

So here’s the big picture idea of this video: I took a look at the current state of Youtube and tried to put together a plan to go viral based on what I thought would work at the time. This is something that constantly changes; what’s a fresh idea today won’t be a fresh idea 6 months from now. I hit that nail right on the head in a way that worked perfectly for that period in the fall of 2014.

I also leveraged the resources available to me at the time through the companies that were seeking influencers like me to work with. Again, resources will always change, and who companies will want to work with will always change. I just happened to be in tune with exactly what was going to work, and I struck while the iron was hot for this type of content. Which I still try to do to this day!
