You've SET UP your characters and story situation in the first quarter of your book or script. Your hero/ine has a DESIRE and a PLAN to get it.

In this video, we move into the essential elements of Act II, Part 1.

Act II, Part 1 is the second quarter of a story: the second half-hour of a movie (pages 30-60 in a 120-page script), or pages 100-200 in a 400-page book. I teach Act II as two distinct halves, Act II: Part 1, and Act II: Part 2. It's a LOT easier to write that long Act II if you look at it as two separate acts!

We’ve already set up a whole lot in Act I. So these first few Key Story Elements, we’ve already discussed, and they may well have already occurred in Act I:

Crossing the Threshold/ Into the Special World

Threshold Guardian/Guardian at the Gate (possibly)

Hero/ine’s Plan

Antagonist’s Plan

If not, you’re definitely going to want to get them in very early in Act II!

In fact, the PLAN is so incredibly important to your whole Act II that if you need a refresher, don’t even read any more of this post—just go straight to this one about that crucial PLAN:
