What is the difference between communication and propaganda? Quick Hits
Kevin Wash started this conversation off strong by saying “honesty.” He believes propaganda is hype and meant to influence people while communication is open and honest.
Elissa Hecker agreed with the honesty part but added that propaganda usually include some kind of scapegoat and has an inherently negative connotation.
Daniel Redman added that propaganda has more emotion and a seeding of disinformation.
I wondered about “truth” and if something being a communication or propaganda might depend on whose side you are on. If you agree with the message – communication. If you disagree and think it is trying to lead people astray – propaganda.
Kevin believes propaganda can be used positively in business and gives an example of two American actors who have purchased a football (soccer) club in England.
Is marketing the same thing as propaganda? If not, why not?
Based on Kevin’s take that propaganda is the same (or at least very similar) as hype, maybe I need to get some propaganda going for my business.
