What is the difference between talent and genius? Quick Hits

This was a much tougher question than I expected and it made me think both when we recorded it and when I listened back to it after it was edited.

James Lee started us off by saying the difference is that talent has to do with existing things and genius is about new things.

Todd Karges feels like talent leaves room for more while someone who is a self-described genius doesn’t have room for more. (Please ignore Todd’s echo.)

Eric Jackson thinks talent has to do with passion while genius is more innate.

I feel like talent is something you are good at and with work you can become better. I don’t think humans “are” geniuses or not. Instead, I like to use an older definition of “having” a genius. Something that can strike you in a moment and also go away if you don’t use it.

Jim brought in the idea that talent is the innate ability to gain a skill.

Eric added that skill and experience will reveal genius.

In the end we had some questions:

What would make you say you were talented at something?
What would cause you to believe you were (or had) a genius?
Do ideas exist outside of us and are simply looking to be brought to life?
