Chant élégiaque was published in 1922 and dedicated to Mathieu Crickboom's brother Joseph, who died in March 1915. Joseph was also a violinist, and studied with Eugène Ysaÿe just like his brother.
This piece exists in a version for cello and piano also. Somehow it was given opus number 11, same as Crickboom's Sonata for violin and piano.
