The deformation gradient tensor is a pseudo-tensor that is very helpful for deriving and understanding the strain tensors because it contains information on the kinematics of deforming material segments in continuous bodies. Here we explain the deformation gradient tensor and show how it can be used to identify when a deformation occurred and what this transformation was like from one state to another.
