Tupolev Tu-22. Soviet Supersonic Bomber

Dozens of pilots gave their lives for this aircraft. It was the Soviet long-range, heavy supersonic aircraft designed by the Tupolev Design Bureau, the Tu-22. Our pilots nicknamed it "Cannibal," and for good reason. It entered service in 1962, and from then until the end of its service in the mid-1990s, it carried a trail of infamy. The Tu-22's safety was always highly questionable due to numerous emergencies and fatal crashes, as it suffered so many defects that both test pilots and operational pilots had to fight on it. Nevertheless, the aircraft remained in service for 30 years, and it was also used as a basis for the Tu-22M, which remains in service today.
