On July 28, 2002, an Ilyushin Il-86 airliner, operated by Pulkovo Airlines, was performing a ferry flight from Moscow to St. Petersburg. Just a minute after takeoff, the plane crashed a kilometer from Sheremetyevo Airport. This was the first and last air disaster in the 31-year service life of the Il-86. Today, we will try to understand how one of the safest airliners in the USSR crashed on takeoff.

The overall investigation revealed numerous deficiencies in the Il-86 flight manual, crew simulator training, the technical condition of the simulators, and the aircraft design, indicating lapses in oversight of aircraft operation by civil aviation authorities. This air crash forever marked the first and last Il-86 crash in history.
