On the evening of May 23, 1978, residents of the Voskresensky District of the Moscow Region, accustomed to the constant test flights of aircraft from the Ramenskoye Airfield, witnessed the flight of the new Soviet supersonic airliner, the Tu-144. But this flight was unusual...
The plane was flying low and burning. A plume of black smoke reached the length of the fuselage, and tongues of flame erupted from the tail. The burning airliner, brushing treetops, descended over a field and landed, plowing through a kilometer of marshy land, half of which was on its belly. There was no explosion, allowing the six crew members to escape. The fuselage, except for the nose section, was completely destroyed. The two pilots were trapped inside their seats and died. In 1983, work on the aircraft ceased, after which the airworthy aircraft were used primarily for research and exhibition purposes.
As for foreign competitors, the only Soviet supersonic passenger airliner, the Anglo-French Concorde, carried passengers until 2003, while a similar American project, the Boeing 2707, was never built. This marked the end of the story of the USSR's first and last supersonic passenger airliner.
