On January 8, 2020, at 6:00 a.m. local time, a Ukraine International Airlines Boeing 737-800 took off from Imam Khomeini Airport in Tehran, heading for Kyiv. Two minutes later, contact with the plane was lost, and four minutes later, the aircraft crashed, killing all 176 people on board.
Iran officially stated that the crash was caused by an engine fire and subsequent crew error. For several days, Ukrainian, Canadian, and American investigators explored theories of aircraft malfunction, crew error, or air traffic control error, until Iranian President Hassan Rouhani confirmed on January 11 that the UIA Boeing 737 was shot down as a result of an unintentional error by an Iranian air defense system operator.
How did a scheduled passenger flight, operating according to all international flight regulations and under the control of air traffic control, become a legitimate target for air defense systems? To answer this question, we will examine the chain of events that began a month before the tragedy and reconstruct it minute by minute.

Unfortunately, civilian aircraft are not isolated incidents of missiles accidentally hitting them. Since World War II, there have been thirteen such incidents worldwide, an average of one every six years. But this isn't the first tragedy for Ukraine and Iran.
The previous incident occurred in 2014 over Ukraine, when a Malaysian Boeing 777 was shot down, claiming 298 lives. And in 1988, Iran lost its Airbus A300 with 290 passengers to a missile from the USS Vincenesse.
One can only hope that the necessary conclusions have been drawn and that similar mistakes will not be repeated in the future.
