Exploring Seattle in a Little Rain and Learning Database Administration
I finished week 4 of my time in #Seattle at Flatiron School's #Data Science Bootcamp. I'm actually recording this video at the end of week 5. My family came to visit at the end of week 4 and that took priority over recording a #vlog. Then, this week, we had a bit of a cram week with the shortened schedule due to Labor Day and I didn't have time to work out, much less record more. It's actually thunderstorming and raining outside, so I'm using the really nice mic outside in the hopes of capturing some of that sound to layer underneath.
Let's go over my favorite photos from last week! I did manage to get one interesting photo with the reflection of the Great Wheel down at the waterfront. I liked this one out of the few hundred photos I got. There's just enough water reflection to show the circular wheel shape and it repeats a few times. Do I think I would put it in my portfolio? To be honest, I kind of doubt it. I still like the idea of this more than the result, which tells me that I should go back and keep photographing this subject.
My actual favorite photo requires some explanation and now I'm not even sure if I remembered to show it in last week's video! You know those posters that get stapled onto power poles? Well, for some reason, no one around here wants to take down old ones. It's like a physical metaphor for Seattle's famed passive aggressive-ism. Taking down an older poster might offend people, I guess, so new ones just continually get stapled on top! I saw all the many layers of paper in this close up shot and really liked it! My mom had even commented on how cool the layers and layers of posters looked as we walked around without me prompting her.

For the Flatiron Data Science boot camp, we learned database administrative programs this week! We spent a lot of time playing around in SQL, followed by looking at some example APIs, web scraping with Beautiful Soup, and finally touched on MongoDB.
SQL, in my opinion, is quite easy to use, but to understand how it works, you need to put in the reps and practice a lot to effectively and efficiently use it. Our instructor said he'd send us weekly SQL problems to keep our skills sharp, and I'm glad to be getting the opportunity to check those out!
I've been toying with the idea of doing a stream where I load a Kaggle competition and work on it for a bit or just edit a photo! If you'd be interested in seeing that, let me know!
For fun exploring this week, I didn't do much new stuff. I walked through Pike Place Market when The Head and The Heart were about to perform and saw a TON of people there waiting for the show…and then promptly felt old since I had no idea who The Head and The Heart were. I got a cropped pano from Monorail Espresso that I quite like, although I'm totally going to photograph it over and over again. I even tried their espresso this week and liked it!
I did get some wet roads for Pike Place on one visit, which I thought looked cool…although postcardy haha. Last place I checked out was the Dr Jose Rizval bridge and park…I'm not a huge fan, especially since the area nearby is sketchy, but it's a popular place for photographers in the area for light trail photography with cars.
Next week, I spend Labor Day weekend with my family since they're visiting! And then we wrap up the database module at Flatiron and start a subject I dread: statistics and probability…
