For a pleasant Japanese island escape few places compare with Miyajima.

On Japan's Miyajima Island the vibe is relaxed. There are few cars and no traffic lights. You walk among free-roaming Sika deer or you can hop a free shuttle to a cable car that goes to the top of Mount Misen. It's a one of a kind place, relaxing despite the tourists who come by ferry from the mainland near Hiroshima.
Itsukushima Island, better known by its nickname Miyajima (meaning Shrine Island), is a great place to unwind for a few days or as a day trip from Hiroshima and elsewhere on the mainland.
It’s a pleasant 10-minute ferry ride from the town of Miyajimaguchi (with trains that connect seamlessly to Hiroshima).
Aside from the spectacular scenery the island offers, Miyajima is famous for the centuries-old Itsukushima Shrine, a World Heritage site, and several other Shinto and Buddhist shrines and temples, including Toyokuni Shrine, with its five-story pagoda.
For travelers, it’s also just a cool place to take a breather.
