The Malaysian state of Penang, which includes Penang Island where the capital George Town is located, is one of Southeast Asia’s most diverse destinations, with large numbers of Chinese, Malays, Indians, Eurasians, Thais and varied expats.

Because of its role as an entrepot during its days as a British crown colony its architecture, food and culture are distinct from the rest of Malaysia and Southeast Asia.

George Town is a vibrant, densely-populated tropical city embedded on an island that was a jungle paradise when Sir Frances Light claimed it for Great Britain in 1766. In the hills above the city and along the ocean shores on the island’s west and northwest sides one can still enjoy that paradise.

Or if you prefer, you can disappear in the streets and the exotic sights, sounds and rhythms of the colorful urban landscape.
