AI and the Ethical Educator: Balancing Innovation and Integrity in Health Professions Education - Sept 19th, 2023
This presentation will include an overview of the capabilities and limitations of generative AI tools (e.g. ChatGPT), with a specific focus on applications in health professions education. In addition, issues and questions of academic integrity in relation to generative AI will be discussed. The presentation will include opportunity for discussion and questions.
Dr. Erin Aspenlieder is an Associate Director with the Paul R. MacPherson Institute for Leadership, Innovation and Excellence in Teaching and Learning at McMaster University. She is coordinator for the Task Force on Generative AI in Teaching and Learning and led the development of McMaster's Provisional Guidelines on the Use of Generative AI in Teaching and Learning. She holds a PhD in English and Cultural Studies from McMaster.
For the past ten years Kimberly Mason has been the Academic Integrity Officer at McMaster University. She oversees the Academic Integrity Policy, is the intake Officer for the Research Integrity Policy and provides support to educators and students to help mitigate integrity concerns. Having worked the past 25 years in Student Affairs, she brings a wealth of knowledge when advising McMaster University on emerging issues pertaining to academic and research integrity.
Rebecca Taylor is an Educational Developer with the Paul R. MacPherson Institute for Leadership, Innovation, and Excellence in Teaching. She has over 10 years of experience in delivering diverse teaching and learning supports for faculty, instructors, staff, and graduate students. Currently, her priorities include coordinating McMaster’s Valuing and Evaluating Teaching Hub, leading the MacPherson Institute’s Educational Development Fellows program, and serving as the MacPherson Institute’s key contact liaison for the Faculty of Health Sciences. Rebecca's research interests include feedback on teaching practices, student evaluations of teaching, policy in post-secondary education, and indigenization and decolonization of teaching and learning.
