What Distinguishes a Credible Mixed Methods Study From Other Research Approaches? - Nov 7th, 2023

The field of mixed methods research is rapidly evolving, and it can be challenging to keep pace with emerging practices. This is especially apparent in publications of mixed methods research where the ‘quality control and improvement’ roles for the peer review process can be limited by the availability of peer reviewers with mixed methods-specific expertise. We will examine current conceptualizations of key quality criteria associated with mixed methods research, discuss some emerging practices, and highlight illustrative health research examples.

Cheryl Poth, Ph.D. is a Professor in the Centre for Research and Applied Measurement and Evaluation at the University of Alberta. She is an award-winning author of four research-focused textbooks and editor of the forthcoming SAGE Handbook of Mixed Methods Research Design. She was a founding board member and President of the Mixed Methods International Research Association. She has delivered mixed-methods research keynotes, invited talks, short courses, and workshops on four continents and across Canada and the US. Her health-related studies are published in the Journal of Mixed Methods Research, BMC Health Service, Academic Medicine, and Medical Teacher.
