BMW 850 / 840 (E31) – Something from outer space
Today, I’m going to tell you a story about the most technologically advanced BMW of its time and one of the most unusual and brightest BMW cars ever made – the BMW 850, also known as E31, produced from 1990 to 1999.
This car had one of the best aerodynamics in the world at its time, better than many famous sports cars. It looked like a real enfant-terrible in the respectable German family of BMW cars.
But people liked it. A lot. When the car was first shown to the public, BMW instantly got so many orders that new customers had to wait for 3 years in the line to get a car. The E31 immediately became a car design icon, and the posters with its pictures ended up in the rooms of millions of boys around the world.
The BMW E31 had great engines and was very fast. It had virtually perfect steering and suspension. It was a little heavy but very powerful, predictable, and fun-to-drive. And it was fully stuffed with the most modern electronic system. Probably, it was the most technically advanced car of its time.
It was unusual, it was beautiful, it was breathtaking, and it was unforgettable.
For its time and market positioning, it was really something from outer space.
