After “I Shall Be Released” Dylan departed, leaving center stage to Joan Baez. “Bobby will be back,” she assured the crowd. Joan was extremely personable, talking and joking with the audience (check out her Edith Bunker imitation). She also made a number of appeals to local pride (as evidenced by the reaction to the line “from San Diego up to Maine” at 9:38). She started out with her recent hit “Diamonds and Rust,” about her old fling with none other than the ringmaster of this particular circus himself, Bobby Dylan. She closed with a lovely rendition of “Please Come to Boston,” Dave Loggins' hit song from the previous year. Among her other selections was the old union organizing anthem “Joe Hill,” which had been the highlight of her set at Woodstock.
I saw Bob Dylan and the Rolling Thunder Revue in Augusta, Maine on November 26th, 1976. I was thirteen years old, and went with my two older sisters. It was the very first rock concert I ever attended. I had always assumed that my only memento of the event would be the uncertain grasp of memory. I was pleasantly surprised recently when I came across a recording of the show online. The sound quality isn’t great: it was recorded with a mid-1970s microphone and cassette player by a member of the audience. Nonetheless, you can still get a good sense of what an outstanding show it was.
