What is Flow in rap?
If you listen to rap at all, I’m sure you’ve heard about flow. Develop your flow, oh that’s a smooth flow, the flow was off here, etc. etc. But what exactly is flow? Let’s get into it a little bit
Flow is generally defined as the culmination of an emcees style through both rhythm or cadence and rhyme schemes. Flow can also be used to refer to those elements combined with delivery and tone though these are generally considered separate aspects.
There is no best or worst flow, just different aspects of flow and how you use them. For example, syllables per bar, use of rhyme scheme, speed of reciting, where you place your rhymes on the beat, how long you hold certain syllables, etc. all have an impact on your flow.
Now generally, the difference between a good and a bad flow is how you fit yourself on the beat. When that sound comes across smooth, it’s generally considered a good flow. When you are off beat and inconsistent or completely clash with the beat that generally creates what people consider a bad flow. None of these are hard and fast rules though, there are always exceptions, at the core of things there are all kinds of different styles.
Now you may have a better understanding of flow, but are still confused about if a rapper has one flow or multiple flows. Your flow can be different on each song that is rapped over, because of that a rapper can have as many flows as he can think of or try using. That being said, many rappers have a flow, similar flows, or a normal flow that they regularly use because it is what they are most comfortable with and how they naturally express themselves.
