The practice of descending below the water's surface to interact with the environment is known as underwater diving. The physiological effects of immersion in water and exposure to high ambient pressure limit the depths and durations attainable in ambient pressure diving. Humans are neither physiologically or anatomically well adapted to the environmental conditions of diving, so varied equipment has been designed to increase the depth and duration of human dives, as well as to allow for different sorts of labor.

The diver is immediately exposed to the pressure of the surrounding water when doing ambient pressure diving. The saturation diving technique decreases the danger of decompression sickness (DCS) following long-duration deep dives, and the ambient pressure diver may dive on breath-hold, or employ breathing apparatus for scuba diving or surface-supplied diving. To protect the diver from excessive ambient pressure, atmospheric diving suits (ADS) might be utilized. Submersibles with crews can go deeper, and remotely controlled or robotic machinery can lessen human risk.
