Parachuting, often known as skydiving, is a gravity-assisted descent from a high point in the atmosphere to the Earth's surface, involving the use of a parachute or parachutes to control speed throughout the descent.
When it comes to human skydiving, there may be a period of more or less free-falling (the skydiving section), during which the parachute is not yet deployed and the body progressively accelerates to terminal velocity.
For cargo parachuting, the parachute descent may start immediately, as in a parachute-airdrop in Earth's lower atmosphere, or it may start much later, as in a planetary atmosphere where an object is descending "under parachute" following atmospheric entry from space, and may start only after the hypersonic entry phase and initial deceleration caused by friction with the thin upper atmosphere.
