My Rat Bit Me | Hormonal Aggression | Rat Diary
Why we neutered Bear the rat earlier than planned due to an increase in hormonal aggression toward people.

It is very rare for a domestic rat to bite a person, but when they do it's usually because they are scared and a person pushed them too far, stressed out in their environment, startled or they might be displaying symptoms of hormonal aggression.
In this video I show one of many clips I shared with Bears breeder, my veterinary surgeon and other knowledgeable people in the rat fancy to decipher why Bear had bitten me. This clip is not of the bite that concerned me, it's only a nip through my dressing gown, but he displays similar dominance behaviour we'd seen on the lead up. I knew it wasn't Bears fault and I was trying to decide what I should do to avoid being bitten in the future; in this case castration was recommended.
If you don't already I'd recommend reaching out to experienced people in the fancy to discuss your rat if you're concerned about hormonal aggression. I found bouncing ideas and exploring what else could have been going on to be invaluable in making the decision to castrate or modify his environment.
