Elephants are a keystone species, crucial to the environments they live in. But they aren’t always welcome, such as in the area bordering Mozambique’s Gorongosa National Park. Here, elephants regularly destroy crops that sustain local communities.
As well as methods like alarm systems and rangers, the region has installed an innovative series of beehive fences to stop the crop raiders in their tracks. But why are mighty elephants so afraid of bees? And what else can be done to limit human–wildlife clashes?
