The Iberian Lynx is No Longer Endangered! 🎉
As of June 20, 2024, one of the world's rarest cats, the Iberian lynx, has been reclassified from "endangered" to "vulnerable" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
🌍 This wild cat, native to Spain and Portugal, has seen its population surge from just 62 in 2001 to over 2,000 today. Thanks to incredible conservation efforts, including:
🐇 Boosting the population of their main food source, the European rabbit
🌲 Restoring their natural habitats
🚫 Preventing poaching and road accidents
Conservation leader Francisco Javier Salcedo Ortiz hails this as the "greatest recovery of a cat species ever achieved through conservation." However, he reminds us there's still work to be done to ensure their future. 🐾🌿
