You won’t believe this, wolf leaders could be zombies, and it's all a classic cat-and-dog story.
If you have cats, you've heard about toxoplasmosis, a disease caused by a parasite that can infect warm-blooded animals. The parasite can only reproduce in felines, so when it infects other animals, it needs to find a way to get back into cats. Infected rats take more risks and are attracted to feline urine, which is not very smart if you are a rat.
After analyzing wolves in Yellowstone National Park, it was clear that infected wolves tend to leave the pack much earlier than expected. Infected wolves are also more likely to become pack leaders because the parasite increases their testosterone levels, making them more aggressive and dominant. As pack leaders, they can pass the parasite on to their offspring and also make decisions like moving to cougar territory, which could lead to a pack infection.
