EXPLORING COFRU OLD TOWN | Greece Travel Vlog
Join me as we explore Corfu's old town, full with Venetian influenced architecture, beautifully designed churches and a 15th century old fort.
We started the day off by visiting the two main churches within the old town. The first being the Holy Metropolitan Church of the Virgin Mary, located at Mitropolis Square, and then followed by the Holy Church of Saint Spyridon, located just a couple of streets away. Unfortunately, the use of cameras in both churches was not allowed, but trust me, the insides were just as beautiful as the outsides.
After passing by Eleftherias Avenue (Liston), an area designed during the Second French Occupation, we arrived at Corfu Museum of Asian Art. Even tho we didn't go inside, we did have a little wonder around the grounds of Anaktoron Square, specifically to see the column and lantern lined passage way.
Next on the list to visit, and only located next door to the square, was Corfu's old fort, a Venetian fortress built to protect the town from enemies and pirates. It was only €6 for entry and I would allow 2 hours to explore the site. The are a couple of museum rooms, along with climb up the steep pathways to reach near to the top. There is a cafe by Saint George's Church on the south side, and the Sailing restaurant overlooking Mandraki Marina on the north.
Upon completing the old fort, we decided to make our way from the old town to an area which I believed to be called Mon Repos (which I know I may have said wrong in the video). Following around the Garitsa Bay, we arrived at the Anemomilos Windmill. Located directly next door was a restaurant called Anemomylos, which I highly recommend stopping at. It has some amazing views, delicious food and they even helped us order a taxi later in the evening.
Whilst also in the area, we stopped by Mon Repos Park, which is where the elegant 19th-century house, famously known as the birth place of Prince Phillip, is located. There are also some other ruins within the park, along with a beach dock providing the perfect relaxation spot in the evenings.
Just a side note, we did plan to visit the new Venetian fortress, however its closed to visitors on Tuesdays, which was the day we happened to be out exploring the old town so sadly couldn't step inside.
