7 CRUCIAL TIPS
Tip 1: don’t pause & think for too long
• That includes planning for essays.
• The anatomy of the essay should be in your head, not on your paper.
• Workings and drafts are not part of the final output and are not worth any marks.
• The typical planning time for an essay is between 10 to 15 mins for most exams.
Tip 2: don’t pick unfamiliar topics
• You will need more time for brainstorming.
• You are unsure of how the ideas interplay, and may require more thought, and therefore, more time.
• For important academic exams, it is not a good time to take BIG RISKS!
• Trying out new, unfamiliar topics should occur during practices.
Tip 3: don’t start writing until you are confident of the points
• To prevent multiple cancellations.
• Some cancel parts of the writing, while others cancel the entire essay and have to start from scratch.
• A COMPLETE TIME WASTER!
Tip 4: DO be confident of your grammar
• To prevent having to go back and forth correcting grammar mistakes.
• Write fluently to score marks, and to save time.
• Become familiar with a variety of sentence structures so that you can use them fluently during exams.
• Exam time is NOT the time to spend time questioning your own grammar!
Tip 5: adopt some form of cursive writing
• Cursive writing helps you to write faster as you don’t have to frequently lift your pen off the paper.
• The writing is more continuous.
• Cursive writing requires practice. Keep at it to become good and fast!
Tip 6: Focus on legibility & not beauty
• The one with the highest score is often not the one with the most beautiful (or neatest) handwriting.
• It’s the most accurate.
• Therefore, handwriting NEEDS to be LEGIBLE but need not be the most beautiful.
• Stop worrying about how neat or pretty your handwriting is so that you can GO FASTER!
Tip 7: pick a pen that works for you
• Gel pens, ballpoint pens, or fountain pens?
• Gel pens have stronger inks and writing looks bolder and more confident.
• However, they have the tendency to imprint on the backside of the page.
• Ballpoint pens are smoother and generates less friction.
• Hence, it moves more fluidly across the paper.
• However, some people do not like the intensity of the ink.
• Fountain pens are not recommended for exams as they smudge too easily and require a certain skill level to use properly.
• RECOMMEND: 0.7mm tip ballpoint pen.
