Tip 1: Improve on Reading Speed & Skill
• You need to understand the main ideas/points of the article.
• Gist reading is not enough.
• That means reading the passage for at least 2 to 3 times.
Tip 2: Annotate the Text
• Use a highlighter or underline the topic sentences or the assertions in each paragraph.
• DO NOT underline everything.
• DO NOT annotate irrelevant material.
• If examples are not needed, leave them out.
• Check if main points are embedded in examples.
Tip 3: Paraphrase (Not Copy)
• Your summary is not considered to be original if you COPY the text.
• Instead, paraphrase the main points with your own words.
• Ensure that while paraphrasing, you retain the MEANING of the original sentences.
Tip 4: Follow the Requirements
• If you are answering an exam question, you may be given some requirements.
• Make sure that you stick STRICTLY to the requirements and DO NOT digress.
• If there is a word count limit, do not exceed the word count.
