How to Write a Summary
& Get TOP GRADES!! (In 5 simple steps)
Step 1: Underline the KEY requirements
• Start by underlining or highlighting the KEY requirements
• i.e. what are you supposed to summarize?
• Make sure you FULLY COMPREHEND the requirements
• Otherwise, you may not be picking out the RELEVANT points
Step 2: Scan the text for relevant points
• Scan the text and underline ALL the relevant points.
• Some summary exercises will require to identify a certain number of points.
• Make sure you meet the requirements.
• Do not worry about the word count at this stage. Focus on relevancy.
Step 3: Start Summarizing Each Point
• You may or may not be required to write the answer in your own words.
• If you are REQUIRED to use your own words as much as possible, be sure to paraphrase each point.
• Paraphrasing is a skill that requires practice.
• The goal is to use your own words WITHOUT changing the meaning of the original point.
Step 3-1: Paraphrasing Example
• Original sentence: Last year, many teens who were still studying took the opportunity to learn how to cook and the course was a huge success.
• Incorrect paraphrasing: A year ago, a number of successful youths took the course and learnt how to cook.
• Correct Paraphrasing: Many students took the chance to pick up cooking and the course was successful.
Step 4: Removing all unnecessary words
• This step requires a good command of language.
• Many words can be removed if they do not contribute to the meaning of the key points.
Step 5: Check and edit your own work!
• This final step can greatly improve the quality of your answer.
• Many students simply do not put in the effort to check their work.
• Remove all grammar, punctuation and spelling mistakes.
• And most importantly, check the accuracy of your words and phrases.
• If you can think of more accurate words or phrases, simply replace them.
