The NASA Space Shuttle Story
Once just a design on a drawing board. What we now remember as the NASA Space Shuttles were once simple prototypes testing the laws of physics, beginning with the X-20 Dyna-Soar.
Through many instances of trial and error, and pushing the boundaries of scientific advancement, the Space Shuttle was born, with the original test module named Enterprise.
The first model to be launched into space was Columbia. Next was Challenger, which suffered a catastrophic accident after takeoff. Then came Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavor.
Years later, concluding the end of the Space Shuttle program, there ended up being 5 orbiters, with 135 total missions with 133 successful returns. The Space Shuttle was used to deploy scientific innovation among the stars including satellites, the International Space Station, Skylab, and Mir. From its first flight on April 12th, 1981, to its final landing on July 21st, 2011.
Up until recently, the Space Shuttle was the only U.S. Spacecraft to carry American Astronauts until the recent launch of the SpaceX Dragon Capsule on May 30th, 2020. of United States Astronauts until the recent usage of the SpaceX dragon Capsule on May 30th of 2020.
The overall Space Shuttle program was estimated to cost $221 Billion Dollar as of 2012. Although the Space Shuttle may no longer soar in the skies today, its legacy will always remain among the great stories of American Aviation History.
