The Boeing 747: A Flying Piece of World History | The Boeing 747 Spectacular
The Boeing 747, throughout all of its years of service and innovation has been both an emblem of American Pride and World History. Originally meant to be a military transport aircraft for the United States Air Force, the Boeing 747’s large size was meant to transport heavy cargo, that at the time could not be transported by other smaller military transports.
In 1963, the USAF released the requirements for their wanted aircraft. Multiple aviation companies such as Boeing, Douglas General Dynamics, Lockheed, and Martin Marietta came with their designs for the main body, and General Electric, Curtiss Wright, and Pratt & Whitney brought their ideas for the engines.
In the end Lockheed and General Electric’s proposal entitles the C-5 ended up being the choice of the USAF, and Boeing’s proposal ended up going into storage.
A few years later, Juan Trippe-the President of Pan Am Airlines, Boeing’s biggest customer to create Pan Am asked Boeing to create an airliner twice the size of the Boeing 707. Luckily for Boeing they already had a plane of that size tucked away in their design archives.
Through much testing, and much delay, the Boeing 747 had its first flight on February 9th, 1969 at the Everett Factory in Washington.
After a few more sets of testing, and pilot training the 747-100 entered service with Pan Am from New York to London on January 22nd, 1970z
As the demand for air travel increased, more and more 747s rolled off the assembly line. A big hit the 747 soon became the staple airplane of airlines around the world.
