Speed Control, Part One: When it comes to controlling your horse, whether it won't slow down (maybe it bolts, "runs through the bit," or simply "takes off") - or it's just the opposite, your horse won't speed up... well, if you've got no speed control - you haven't got any control and that's a dangerous situation. Period. Here in this video, I explain one of two exercises designed to teach you how to control your horse - specifically we learn how to make your horse to go at the speed you choose, when you choose... for as long as you choose.

(Speed Control, Part 2 teaches you and your horse to pick a speed and stay at that particular speed; it can be found here:    • Exercises to Slow Down Your Horse - or Spe...  .)

Here, in Part 1 (of 2), we learn and practice the simple exercise "Steer the Tail."

To learn even more, check out my basic horse training book, "What I'd Teach Your Horse, Training and Re-training the Basics." An excerpt from the "Speed Control" chapter:

"When you first put a saddle on your horse, the horse didn't know if it was a forever thing and it probably bucked. The idea is similar here. When you ask for a particular speed, (maybe you're trying to slow the lope down, maybe you're trying to speed the trot up) the horse doesn't know that he'll be allowed to stop at that gate over there so he might very well speed up or slow down to register his discontent. The work described here teaches the horse that he can do what is expected. It teaches your horse to travel at a constant rate and an ever-broadening range of speeds."
