Morgan's a'comin'! Morgan's a'comin'! This fearful cry rang out across Harrison County Community July 8-9, 1863, as General John Hunt Morgan and his band of Raiders invaded by crossing the Ohio River. The Historical Society of Harrison County is offering everyone an opportunity to participate in our upcoming booklet project "Hoofprints from the Past." The goal of the project is to collect stories about John Hunt Morgan's impact on Harrison County families, neighborhoods and communities as he and his Raiders passed through. It doesn't have to be anything fancy...We are looking for as many personal accounts as we can find...Just tell in your own words, what happened in your neighborhood or to your family...Some suggested examples include...Did the Raiders steal horses, pies, chickens, or other foodstuffs, weapons, jewelry or other valuables? Did Morgan's men take anyone captive? Where did your relatives hide? Where did they hide their horses? How scared were they? Any ghost stories? What did your ancestors say to the Raiders? What did the Raiders say or do to your ancestors? Anybody get shot in your neighborhood? What stories have been handed down through your family? Any damage to your house, barn or other out buildings? Do you have souvenirs from the event? Of course, this is not intended as comprehensive or limiting list...just some ideas to get your creative juices flowing...Photos of people, locations, memorabilia, letters, 1st person accounts, financial transactions, etc. are welcome. Here's the deal: If you send it in, it will be in the book...If you do not submit something, it probably won't make it into the book...There are multiple ways to submit contributions to Hoofprints from the Past. (Please send the best quality images possible). Send them via snail mail to Karen Schwartz at 5850 Devil's Elbow Road NW Corydon, IN 47112...email them to [email protected] them to the William Henry Harrison Log Cabin at 419 North Capitol Avenue Corydon, Indiana 47112 on Saturdays in September and October from 10-5. (I will have a scanner set up and will scan items on the spot and return them) If you have questions feel free to contact Karen Schwartz, President, Historical Society of Harrison County, Indiana by phone at (812)736-2373 or [email protected].
