This video shows samples of quilt patterns made by the employees at Griffin's Store in Corydon during the 60s and 70s. They are mounted on cardboard squares recycled from boxes. The amazing thing is that each of these prints were available in a variety of colors so you could look at the mounted quilt block and then decide which colors would work best for you. It was veritable rainbow of colors (something we don't get an opportunity to see anymore as fabric departments continue to shrink.) You had green, blue, pink, yellow, orange dotted Swiss, checked gingham, floral prints and all the other amazing designs.
When we were kid, there used to be a continuous plastered overhead shelf that ran around the north end of the store on both sides and these quilt block patterns were balanced up on that around the north end. (So while your mom/grandma was picking out material, I just stood and stared at those block...I loved it!) When you walked into Griffin's the patterns book were right there inside the door that opens onto Beaver Street. (The Chestnut End was devoted to shoes.) The Quilt Blocks are the property of the Historical Society of Harrison County and are used for demonstrations including Quilting at North Harrison Elementary Pioneer Day, First Capitol Quilt Shows, and displays at the William Henry Harrison Log Cabin and historic Posey House.
