Sweet potatoes were domesticated at least 5,000 years ago. According to a study by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, sweet potatoes are the most efficient staple food to grow in terms of farmland.
As a staple food, sweet potato provides less edible energy and protein per unit weight than cereals; however, it has higher nutrient density than cereals.
