Yams are cultivated for their starchy tubers in many temperate and tropical regions, especially in Africa, South America and the Caribbean, Asia, as well as Oceania. As a staple food, yam has only moderate nutrient density. In general, raw yams are not edible, as it cannot be digested. They must be sprouted, or prepared and cooked for human consumption.
