The US bombing campaign in the European theatre of operations rained destruction on the Axis during the latter part of World War 2. The video animation project the locations of every single identified US mission from January 1943 to the end of the year. Red hotspots indicate areas of high bombing density. The circles represent the total tonnage dropped in a mission. The highest number is 400 tones, lowest 2 tons. Sorin Adam Matei (Purdue), Rob Hutchinson, and David Benson (SASAF) are in the process of analyzing the US bombing effort in Europe based on historical records collected by the US military, pinpointing with accuracy every single recorded mission and its devastating impact. The project can differentiate between types of planes, missions, bomb loads, and specific operations. Part of the work is done by machine learning, which will interpolate missing information from the existing one. Ask questions below!
