Does the Orthodox Church observe the Sabbath?
Saturday, which was revered as a day of rest in the Old Testament, is also revered in the Orthodox Church. According to the Church's rules, there is no fasting on Saturday. Prostrations are not required on this day. On this day, an all-night vigil is served in the evening before the Resurrection: everyone begins celebrating the Resurrection on Saturday evening. As the Lord said at the creation of the world: "And there was evening and there was morning, a second day... And there was evening and there was morning, a third day..." (see Genesis 1), beginning the following day in the evening, so too we begin the celebration of any feast or Resurrection with an all-night vigil the day before.
