Teaching Phonics: The Sounds of the Alphabet
This video looks at how to teach the basic sounds of the alphabet in a way that is appropriate for English as a foreign language learners.
It has become common for foreign language learners to learn phonics using methods that were originally designed for native speakers of English, who, in some key respects, have fundamentally different needs.
Native speakers have generally established their pronunciation and are able to distinguish sounds in their native language before learning phonics, so they learn phonics to develop reading and writing skills.
Foreign language learners are usually in a very different situation. In addition to learning phonics to develop reading and writing skills, they are also often establishing their pronunciation skills through phonics. This has important consequences for how to go about teaching the sounds of the alphabet.
