Where are the oldest cave paintings?
A cave painting of human-like figures interacting with a wild pig in Sulawesi, Indonesia, is dated to at least 51,200 years ago, which makes it potentially the earliest narrative cave art reported to date, according to a paper published in Nature.
This age is estimated using a novel approach to a standard cave-art dating method, and pushes back previous dates for paintings on the island by at least 5,700 years. The findings suggest that both the depiction of human-like figures and animals and the use of composed scenes in art have a more ancient origin in human history than previously thought.
