The highlight of the first season of Edison Vitascope at Koster & Bial's Music Hall was a British movie called Rough Sea at Dover (1895), made by Birt Acres. Unlike most of the movies made in Edison's Black Maria, this one was shot outdoors rather than against a theatrically black backdrop. This extra realism, combined with the generalized movement within the frame, made this a very exciting movie.
