Learn with me how to make a lemon battery using a lemons, copper wire and galvanized nails/screws, which can light up an LED.
With the help of an animation, I will also explain how does a lemon battery work - the zinc screw acts as anode, copper wire as cathode and the lemon juice as electrolyte.
Zinc is oxidized by the citric acid in the lemon juice. Since copper is more electronegative than zinc, the free electrons flow across the wire to the copper cathode while lighting the bulb on the way. On the cathode, these electrons combine with the Hydrogen ions in the lemon juice to create hydrogen gas.
