Friday Night Funkin' (often abbreviated to FNF) is an upcoming open-source rhythm game first released as a demo in 2020 for a game jam. The game is being developed by a small group called The Funkin' Crew Inc., with the four founding members being the Newgrounds users Cameron "ninjamuffin99" Taylor, David "PhantomArcade" Brown, Isaac "Kawai Sprite" Garcia, and evilsk8r. The game shares some gameplay features with Dance Dance Revolution and PaRappa the Rapper and borrows aesthetic influences from Flash games. The game has been credited with driving users back to Newgrounds, a site whose popularity peaked in the early 2000s.
The game mainly revolves around the player character, Boyfriend, who must defeat a variety of characters in singing and rapping contests in order to continue dating his love interest, Girlfriend. Gameplay revolves around hitting notes with timed inputs while avoiding running out of health for the duration of the song.
EXE is an alternate version of Sonic.exe created by Raven. He was added in the 2.0 update, but was planned to be removed due to controversy surrounding his creator. His first phase is portrayed as a Sonic impersonation, while his second is a more disturbing form. He was an opponent, Faker and Black Sun. And would've been an opponent in GODSPEED and Slaybells.
Biography
EXE is a creation of void matter created by Sonic.EXE/X, specifically the original one. After being created, Lord X adopted EXE and raised him as a son, and a warrior. But because of how EXE was rebellious at times and went ahead of Lord X, he started to get mad and decided to banish EXE off Lord X's realm and into his own alternative universe to start his own legacy.
Despite the good choice that was, EXE now had one simple goal; which is simply to eradicate all powerful beings, harvest their power with the Black Sun, and destroy the entire multiverse once and for all to become the "god" of everything.
"Sonic", also known as 2017, is a retake on JC the Hyena's 2017 remake of Sonic.exe owned by Raven. He is a delusional entity who genuinely believes to be Sonic the Hedgehog himself. He is intended to be an opponent in the song against Tails, known as Subterfuge.

The plot of the game centers around Boyfriend trying to hook up with Girlfriend, but her ex-rockstar father Daddy Dearest doesn't approve of him. Sonic.Exe, also known today as Xenophanes, is a demonic entity very obsessed with Sonic, idolizing him and taking his appearance. He first debuted in his eponymous creepypasta in the year 2011, where he cold-bloodedly kills Tails, Knuckles, and Eggman, while mentally torturing players (Kyle and Tom) who play "his" game. He gained even more prominence with a game made in 2013 by MY5TCrimson.
Vs. Sonic.EXE is a mod. The main opponent of the mod is the titular character from the Sonic.EXE series, but it also features many other horror-oriented characters from other official and fan-made Sonic media, including Sonic (PC PORT), Sonic CD, Sunky, Sonic R, Sonic Shorts, and Sonic the Comic.
DX is a red virus that resides in the Sonic Classic Collection copy for the Nintendo DS, disguised as Sonic the Hedgehog using the sprite from Sonic. DX invades a gameplay of an unknown player in a Sonic 2 Knuckles "lock-on" mode, although the game does not support Sonic 1 sprite type, DX uses and corrupts it while killing Knuckles and Tails in front of the player.
DX starts out looking identical to Sonic, with the only difference being that he doesn't have a visible mouth and unsettling pupils. He also as more dark blue fur. The outlines on his sprite shift between black and blue in his poses. Shortly into the song, DX's disguise starts to fade. He gains multiple red pupils and a mouth. His incomplete form resembles a tall, monstrous version of Sonic without a mouth. In this state, his skin is completely blue, while his arm and legs are red. He also appears to have several small spikes going down his back.
Mediocrity is a mod created and owned by ThatDudeGrinch. Currently, it features No More Innocence, an EXE created by DuhDumbie, as the main opponent of the mod.
