So much of the work I do in the counseling room is helping to change the relationship folks have with their thoughts and emotions.
Yes work can always be done to explore and understand our experiences and the impact they have. However, much of the distress we find ourselves plagued with is actually stemming from automatically believing every thought/worry and acting on every emotional urge.
This is where acceptance and commitment therapy comes into play, and more specifically, cognitive defusion.
Instead of trying to change our worries (or avoid them entirely) Cognitive defusion offers us a way of creating a little bit of space between us and our thoughts.
