Step 1. First of all, Handbrake is free software that works with both Macs and Windows (not mentioning the Linux) and can be downloaded from the link that you see on screen.
Step 2. Run the program on your computer. We’ll use our Mac to show you the example of converting a large MOV file to quality MP4 file that will fit the YouTube requirements.
Step 3. The size of our file is pretty big. So let’s reduce it. The Handbrake menu may just appear complicated, but you will not need to use much of its functions. Press the “Source” button in the upper left corner and choose “Open File” to open the file that we need to compress. Let’s choose our file now.
Step 4. Under “Destination” choose where you want to save the already compressed file. We’ll make it simple: desktop.
Step 5. Choose the “Output Settings”. We’ll opt for “MP4” and “Web Optimized”.
Step 6. Now choose the “Video” tab from “Output Settings” menu and choose the codec that you need. We’ll pick “H264” codec that gives us a good YouTube quality.
Step 7. Finally, click “Start”. Since our file is pretty big, it took us more than one minute to compress it. With smaller files it may take just seconds.
Result: Here you go. You’ve just learned how to compress your video files without loosing their quality. For more information on Handbrake, please see our “How to merge video files” tutorial.
