In this tutorial we will guide you on how to make a gun bullet hole effect in Adobe After Effects.
For this tutorial, we will be working on a free stock footage which can be downloaded from the following link:
• Video
In the video, the object is aiming and shooting at the wall. So let's make some bullet holes appear on the wall when he starts shooting.
We will be using the following bullet hole effect stock video so be sure to download it before getting started:

Step 1 -- Using the key light filter
To get started, we will first separate the object from the background. For that, we will apply the Key Light video effect on the layer. So move to the effects and presets panel, search for key light and once located, drag the video filter over the main layer.
With that done, move to the effects control panel and pick up the eye dropper tool. Now select the color which you want to remove from the footage, so in this case simply click on the green background. You will notice the checkered background will appear instead of the green background. That the background has been removed.
Step 2 -- Configuring the Key light filter
Just by removing the background using the eye dropper tool, you will notice that parts of the object and the gun will also get removed. You need to mask the entire object first so that you can create a better internal matte. This would make keying very easy, especially when talking about the problem zones, like the hands in this case. So pick up the pen tool and make a rough path to cover the entire object. You can make a detailed path, but it depends on the composition you are working on. In this case, a rough selection would do just fine.
With that done, move to the effects control panel and configure the settings. Over here, keep the Screen Gain to 100 and increase the Screen Balance to 66. Now expand the Screen Mate Menu and over here you will have to configure each and every value.
First of all, increase the Clip Black option to 22. After that, set the Clip White option to 23. Next, the Clip Rollback option should be kept to 2.4, the Screen Shrink/Grow option to 0.3 and lastly, Screen Softness to 2.7.
Step 3 -- Creating a solid layer
Once done, create a solid layer by right clicking on the layer panel, moving to new and clicking on the solid option.
Over here, you can use whatever color you want for the background. With that done, click on OK and move the layer below the original layer.
Step 4 -- Using the bullet hole effect video
Now we will use this bullet hole effect stock footage over here and add it to the composition.
With that done, reduce the size of the bullet hole layer. For that, select the layer and press the "S" key. Once done, you will notice the scale option appearing below the layer. Now reduce the size to 9.3% and position it in in front of gun. You can do that by dragging the frame using the cursor or simply pressing the "P" key and you would see the position option appearing in place of the scale option. Now you can change the position values according to the video. For this tutorial, we have set the values to 780 and 314.
Step 5 -- Syncing both the video clips
It's important to sync both the clips. As soon as the object starts shooting, the bullet holes should appear on the wall right then and there. If there is a huge gap where nothing is happening on the bullet holes layer, it won't look realistic enough. So it's important to drag the bullet holes timeline and trim the layer till the frame the bullets appear on the screen. You can even use the shortcut key "Alt+[" to trim the clip.
Step 6 -- Removing the background
Next, it's time to remove the background on the bullet holes layer. For that, you will need to apply the Key Light video effect on the layer. For that, move to the effects and presets panel and drag the video filter over the main layer.
With that done, move to the effects control panel and pick up the eye dropper tool. With that done, you will need to move on the screen and click on the green background. That will remove the background from the bullet hole effect video.
