How to Add Cracked Screen Effect on Video

In this tutorial, we will guide you on how to add a cracked screen effect on a video in After Effects.
For this tutorial, we will be working with a free stock footage which is available on YouTube:

In the video, you will notice that the gun is pointed towards the screen and as soon as the shooting starts, we will add bullet hole shaped cracks on the screen.
For this tutorial, we will also be using a muzzle effect when the fire is shot. You can download that effect from the link here:

Over here, you would need to download the "Bullet Hole on Glass Pre-Keyed" footage available for free on the website.
Download both of the files, import them in Premiere and let's get started.

Step 1 -- Adding the cracked screen effect video
To sync the cracks in the screen perfectly with the shooting, we have to follow the audio wave form. For that, you will need to first expand the video layer menu so that the audio waveform becomes visible. Now you can add the bullet hole cracks on the screen accordingly.
Now move to the content library bring the pre-keyed broken glass crack effect video on top of the main footage layer. After that, move to the timeline and pay close attention to the audio layer here. Notice that the waveforms from the gunshot are appearing here but no bullet hole is appearing on the screen. Now let's fix this problem.
Step 2 -- Positioning the cracked screen effect video on the screen
If you move further in the timeline, you will see the bullet holes appearing on the screen. So you would need to clip the video at the point where the bullet hole appears on the screen, and move the layer back in the timeline a bit, till the point where the first waveform appears in the audio layer.
To clip the video, you can simply move the cursor to the edge of the clip, when the cursor changes into a double arrow icon, start dragging the clip towards the right side till the point where the bullet hole appears on the screen.
Next, do remember to change the position where the crack appears on the screen by simply dragging it on the screen. Make sure you follow the exact angle the gun is pointed at.
Step 3 -- Adding the second cracked screen effect video
After that, move forward in the timeline and over there we will add the second cracked screen effect on the screen. Notice also that the angle has changed slightly when you move further in the timeline, so you would have to position the crack accordingly.
For that, first duplicate the bullet hole layer. With that done, move the layer a bit forward in the timeline according to the waveform in the audio layer. At the end, do remember to change the position of the layer on the screen by simply dragging it.
Step 4 -- Repeating the same process
Similarly, repeat the same steps again and again for as many shots are fired in the clip. Always remember to first sync the shot with the audio layer and then position the cracked screen effect video according to the angle the gun is being aimed at.
