"Mofumofu Sensen" (also known as "Fluffy Front") is a fairly orthodox (but still unusual) anthropomorphic fighting game produced exclusively for Nintendo's Switch platform in 2022 as a Doujin stealth release by solo dev, BURNSOUCOU. It is known for its advanced usage of the "Petit Computer SMILEBASIC 4" app for Switch which, under ordinary circumstances, requires the application to download other SB programs, but MMSS proved to be such an accomplishment that it managed to get greenlit as a standalone release. It spent roughly 2.5 years in development and is dubbed the Switch's finest "Furry Fighter" by its small but vocal fanbase. The game started out as a Japan-only release but word on the street is that a curious piece of fanart from overseas caught the authors attention which caused him to release the game Internationally... and it released for a modest 700 yen ($6 USD) complete with Japanese / British / Engrish settings. The rest, as they say, is history.
The game has a razor thin plot with slightly less thin character motivations, but they are there. Taking place in a seemingly Post-WW setting, animals of all shapes and sizes are trying to return to a more normal life, before the war. However, this is easier said than done due to the extensive amount of damage that was caused and a handful of groups operating behind the scenes through various proxies with special interests. Very little of this is made public, but things are hinted at through each character's interactions and endings. The "main" character, Zig, for example, is the leader of a pack of war orphans who was shown compassion as a child by Mappo, a well-endowed martial artist who showed Zig the rudiments of fighting and passed her hand-me-downs to (who grew up to join a squad of secret police). Vankov is a Russian Fire-Fighting dog who defends a library and gains sympathy and interest from Medy, an attractive cat woman who values knowledge and fitness in a world of diminishing resources. Daifuku is a proud swordswoman out to hone her skills while Siwon and Dunker are surviving soldiers of the world who are stoic but continue to battle even when their services are no longer needed. None of the characters are inherently "evil" and each character has a special win quote to certain characters and their clone, but Medy and Dunker serve as the final boss and secret boss respectively.
MMSS features seven playable characters that duke it out with a five-button attack scheme (light-medium-heavy-special-throw) and five special attacks and has two uncommon characteristics. The first is the game's unique "Auto Advancing Guard" system which is meant to help draw opponents in and promote a more aggressive playstyle as it discourages turtling. It doesn't work exactly as intended, but combined with the game's other systems (Spammable EX Attacks that cancel into Super Attacks, Guard Crashes, Stunning, Parrying, etc.), matches end quickly and rarely conclude due to a Time Over. The other unique aspect is the game's "Stamina Reserve" system. In an attempt to give the more skilled player a handicap, players will only recover a certain portion of their health between rounds; a near total win will bring you back to full, but if you win a hotly contested match by the skin of your teeth for example, the winner will go into the next match with only about 50% health, giving your opponent a greater chance to level the playing field.
The game does have a deceptive amount of other mechanics that have made their way to other fighters but are a little less common as well. This includes the "Cheap Attack" where spamming the same attack in succession reduces the damage by a fixed amount, a variable "CPU Algorithm" which determines how the A.I. will learn and neutralize patterns, a dynamic scoring system based on executing key maneuvers (with a HUGE bonus achieved by scoring a perfect victory), throw escaping, an adjustable HUD (gauges, colors, etc.), and achievements in the Omake section (a modest but appreciated substitute for the Switch's lack of a dedicated "Trophies", "Achievements" or other systems). The game has some decent audio / visuals for a Doujin fighter (especially for one generally developed by one guy) and can be picked up and best enjoyed by Beginner-to-Intermediate fighting game aficionados and fur fanatics, but don't expect to see the game get to EVO. For its price, it's hard not to recommend and is a fun title to play around with. You can get it at:
