Hey everybody,
Welcome to lighting breakdowns and today we’re talking about a short scene I filmed with Blackmagic pocket 4k a while ago.
Like many indie filmmakers I had very limited resources and time to pull it off but I gave it a try and this is what we managed to come up with.
We were shooting on the real location based on the third floor and hence another limitation besides money and time was no chance to light through windows with our budget.
So, I had to set up my key source in the room.
The key light was Arri 1200w HMI going through 8x8 half-grid diffusion, which I loosely hang on a T-bar in front of the light.
I placed a black floppy on the side so my soft light doesn’t spill onto the background wall too much. Then I positioned the warm practical lamp on the back, it works good both for the wide shot and for CU with just slight position tweaking between shots.
Then I added one more black floppy so I can have a bit more contrast from the camera side.
For the guy sitting closest to the light source, I had to set up a net, slightly reducing the light level on the back of his head.
We needed a gentle shaft of light on the background bookshelves, motivated by the warm practical and I placed an Arri 650w tungsten fresnel for it, coupled with a small cutter so it doesn’t spill on actors.
And that’s basically the lighting for the wide shot and the CU.
